Mr. Marc van der Sterren is writer, freelance journalist, consultant and researcher. As a farmers son he writes a lot about Africa. As owner and chief editor of Farming Africa, he follows agricultural developments in this continent form more than ten years.
He is the only agricultural journalist in The Netherlands who is specialized in Africa. His country is famous for it’s agricultural standards. For Wageningen University, for the technologies and the most efficient intensive farming systems. This helped The Netherlands to become the second exporter of agricultural products in the world.
Those farming system, for long time, have been the example for Africa and other developing countries to expand their production. However, in those times, this intensive approach reaches the ecological borders, while only a few very big farmers are left. This makes the system very capital intensive and risky.
Africa can become the Bread Basket of the world. It is very wise to look at the development of agriculture in other area’s like the Netherlands. Especially in those times where intensive agriculture is nearing its limit.
